Ο Όσιος Βασίλειος ο Ομολογητής καταγόταν από την Αθήνα. Ήταν αρχικά Επίσκοπος Κρήτης και μετετέθη στον αρχιεπισκοπικό θρόνο της Θεσσαλονίκης. Όπως μαρτυρείται από τον Νικήτα Παφλαγόνα ο «Βασίλειος ούτος ο πρότερον μεν Κρήτης επίσκοπος γενόμενος, διά την των Αγαρηνών έξοδον εις Θεσσαλονίκην μετατεθείς». Η χειροτονία του Οσίου Βασιλείου πρέπει να συνέβη κατά την πρώτη πατριαρχία του Πατριάρχου Κωνσταντινουπόλεως Ιγνατίου (846-858 μ.Χ.) και η μετάθεσή του στο θρόνο της Θεσσαλονίκης πολύ σύντομα. Το πιθανότερο είναι να μην πρόλαβε να εγκατασταθεί καθόλου στην Κρήτη και να μετατέθηκε σχεδόν αμέσως στην Θεσσαλονίκη.
