Ο Όσιος Μαρουθάς έζησε κατά την εποχή του αυτοκράτορα Θεοδοσίου Α' του Μεγάλου (379 - 395 μ.Χ.) και ήταν Επίσκοπος της Εκκλησίας του Χριστού. Ο αυτοκράτορας, εκτιμώντας τις αρετές του Αγίου, τον απέστειλε πρεσβευτή στο βασιλέα των Περσών Σαπώρ Γ' (383 - 388 μ.Χ.). Εκεί ο Όσιος απάλλαξε τη θυγατέρα του βασιλέως από το πονηρό δαιμόνιο, που την είχε κυριεύσει και την βασάνιζε. Το γεγονός αυτό του έδωσε θάρρος και ζήτησε από τον βασιλέα της Περσίας τα ιερά λείψανα των Μαρτύρων, οι οποίοι μαρτύρησαν στην Περσία. Εκείνος ικανοποίησε αμέσως το αίτημα του Οσίου. Έτσι, λοιπόν, ο Όσιος έκτισε πόλη επ' ονόματί τους, τη Μαρτυρόπολη (σημερινή Mιεφερκίν), που βρισκόταν στη Μεγάλη Αρμενία, κοντά στο Νυμαφαίο ποταμό, και αποθησαύρισε σε αυτήν τα ιερά τους λείψανα.
