O Άγιος Μαΐωρ (ή Μαΐων) έζησε επί αυτοκρατόρων Διοκλητιανού (284 - 305 μ.Χ.) και Μαξιμιανού (285 - 305 μ.Χ.) και υπηρετούσε ως στρατιώτης στο τάγμα των Μαύρων. Όταν άρχισε ο διωγμός κατά των χριστιανών το 302 μ.Χ., βρισκόταν στην Γάζα όπου καταγγέλλεται στον εκεί έπαρχο ότι είναι χριστιανός. Συλλαμβάνεται και με θάρρος και παρρησία ομολογεί την πίστη του στο Χριστό. O έπαρχος τότε διατάσσει τον μέχρι θανάτου βασανισμό του.
