Η επωνυμία της ιεράς εικόνας της Παναγίας, Ιβηρίτισσα, οφείλεται στην Ιερά Μονή Ιβήρων του Αγίου Όρους, όπου η ιερή εικόνα έφθασε κατά τρόπο θαυματουργικό το έτος 999 μ.Χ., αφού επέπλεε επάνω στα κύματα της θάλασσας.
