Ο Άγιος Αβράμιος έζησε τον 5ο αιώνα μ.Χ. και ήταν Επίσκοπος της Περσικής πόλεως Αρβήλ (τα αρχαία Άρβηλα, πόλη της ΑΑσσυρίας (Μεσοποταμίας), βρισκόταν γύρω στα 90 χιλ. νοτιονατολικά της Μοσσούλης κοντά στα Ιρακινοπερσικά σύνορα. Τώρα ανήκει στο Ιράκ και ονομάζεται Ερμπίλ) επί βασιλέως Σαβωρίου. Κατά το πέμπτο έτος του διωγμού κατά των Χριστιανών, ο οποίος έγινε στην Περσία, ο Άγιος συνελήφθη από τον αρχιμάγο του βασιλέως που ονομαζόταν Αδελφωράς. Ο ειδωλολάτρης αρχιμάγος τον πίεζε, με απειλές και υποσχέσεις να αρνηθεί την πίστη του στον Χριστό και να θυσιάσει στα είδωλα. Τότε ο Άγιος είπε προς αυτόν: «Άθλιε και ταλαίπωρε, πως δεν φοβάσαι προτρέποντάς με να πράξω κάτι που δεν πρέπει; Νομίζεις ότι είναι φυσικό να αρνηθώ τον Δημιουργό και να προσκυνήσω το κτίσμα και δημιούργημά Του;».
