Ο Όσιος Κύριλλος γεννήθηκε στην περιοχή Γκαλίτς της Κοστρομά από ευσεβείς και φιλόθεους γονείς. Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι είχε τη θεία κλήση εκ κοιλίας μητρός. Από την παιδική του ηλικία επιδόθηκε στην άσκηση και την προσευχή και δέχθηκε την κλήση από τον Θεό διά θείου οράματος. Έτσι εγκατέλειψε την πατρική του οικία, για να εγκαταβιώσει στη μονή των Σπηλαίων του Πσκοφ. Αργότερα, όταν οι γονείς του Οσίου Κυρίλλου πληροφορήθηκαν την απόφαση του υιού τους, ακολούθησαν και αυτοί την μοναχική οδό και έγιναν μοναχοί, πρώτα η μητέρα του με το όνομα Ελένη και στη συνέχεια ο πατέρας του με το όνομα Βαρσανούφιος, του οποίου μάλιστα η πνευματική καθοδήγηση ανετέθη από τον ηγούμενο στον υιό του Κύριλλο.
