Ο Δίκαιος Φινεές ήταν ιερέας των Εβραίων από τη φυλή του Ααρών, περί του οποίου διαβάζουμε στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη: «Ὁ Κύριος ὡμίλησε πρὸς τὸν Μωυσὴν καὶ εἶπεν: ὁ Φινεές, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Ἐλεάζαρ υἱοῦ τοῦ Ἀαρῶν, ἔπαυσε τὸν θυμόν του κατὰ τῶν Ἰσραηλιτῶν, διότι οὗτος μὲ ἱερὰν ἀγανάκτησιν, διὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τῶν Ἰσραηλιτῶν, φονεύσας τοὺς ἐνόχους πρωταιτίους καὶ οὕτω δὲ κατέστρεψα ἐν τὴ ἱερά μου ἀγανακτήσει ὅλους τοὺς Ἰσραηλίτας. Ἕνεκεν τῆς τοιαύτης διαγωγῆς του δηλῶ: Νά! Συνάπτω μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐγὼ ὁ Θεὸς συμβόλαιον ἰδιαιτέρων εἰρηνικῶν σχέσεων. Ὑπόσχομαι νὰ δώσω εἰς αὐτὸν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀπογόνους του ἔπειτα ἀπὸ αὐτὸν τὴν ἱεροσύνην παντοτεινήν, ἐπειδὴ ἔδειξε ζῆλον ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἐξιλέωσε τὸν θυμόν μου κατὰ τῶν Ἰσραηλιτῶν».
