Ο Προφήτης Ιωήλ (Ιωήλ κατά την Β΄Παραλειπομένων (Θ΄29), Ιωάδ κατά μερικούς συναξαριστές) καταγώταν από τον Ιούδα (Γ΄Βασιλ. 10). Αυτός λοιπόν στάλθηκε από τον Θεό προς τον βασιλιά Ιεροβοάμ για να ελέγξει αυτόν για τις δαμάλεις (Γ΄Βασιλ. ιγ΄,2). Όταν δε άπλωσε το χέρι του ο Ιεροβοάμ για να κρατήσει τον προφήτη, ξεράθηκε το χέρι του και αποκαταστάθηκε πάλι δια της προσευχής του προφήτου. Επειδή όμως ο προφήτης πήρε εντολή από τον Θεό να μη φάει και πιει, αυτός έφαγε παραπλανηθείς από τον ψευδοπροφήτη Ενβέ. Γι' αυτό κατασπαράχθηκε, για την παρακοή του, από ένα λιοντάρι, χωρίς όμως το θηρίο να φάει το σώμα του. Τάφηκε δε κοντά στον τάφο του πλανήσαντος αυτόν ψευδοπροφήτου Ενβέ.
