Οι Άγιοι Φιλήμων και Δομνίνος κατάγονταν από τη Ρώμη (άλλες πηγές αναφέρουν σαν τόπο καταγωγής τους την Θεσσαλονίκη και ότι αναχώρησαν για την Ρώμη) και έζησαν στα χρόνια της μεγάλης και σκληρής πάλης της ειδωλολατρίας κατά του χριστιανισμού. Με τη φλόγα του ζήλου τους για τον Χριστό, πήγαιναν σε διάφορες πόλεις της Ιταλίας και κήρυτταν τον αιώνιο λόγο της σωτηρίας των ψυχών. Συνελήφθησαν και αφού τους γύμνωσαν και τους τέντωσαν στην γη από τέσσερις μεριές, τους έδειραν ανελέητα και κατόπιν τους φυλάκισαν. Αλλά η αφοσίωση τους στη χριστιανική πίστη εξακολουθούσε ακέραια, και έτσι κάτω από τα ξίφη των δημίων αξιώθηκαν του μαρτυρικού στεφάνου.
