Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος ο Τορναράς, από μικρή ηλικία συναναστρεφόταν με Τούρκους, τούς οποίους ήλεγχε για την απιστία τους. Όταν όμως ο Δημήτριος επιέσθη να γίνει Μωαμεθανός, εκείνος με παρρησία αρνήθηκε. Το ίδιο έκανε και μπροστά στο κριτή, ο οποίος τότε διέταξε να βασανισθεί σκληρά, έως ότου αλλαξοπιστήσει. Όταν όμως είδαν την θαυμαστή εμμονή του Αγίου, τον αποκεφάλισαν το 1564 μ.Χ. χαρίζοντάς του με αυτό τον τρόπο την πολυπόθητη για εκείνον, ουράνια βασιλεία.
