Ο Όσιος Παύλος ονομάστηκε «απλός», διότι ήταν αμαθής γεωργός που δεν γνώριζε τίποτα από τις έθιμοτυπίες του κόσμου. Τον στόλιζε όμως άκακο ήθος και ήταν τέλειος αγαθός ισραηλίτης, χωρίς καμμιά πονηριά και δόλο. Μέχρι τα εξήντα του, οι γεωργικές εργασίες ήταν ή κύρια ασχολία του. Αλλά η σύζυγος του ήταν εντελώς διαφορετική. Αυτή έκανε τη δήθεν ευγενή, διότι έζησε κάποτε σαν υπηρέτρια στην πόλη. Κορόιδευε λοιπόν τον Παύλο σαν κουτό και ανόητο, που χάνεται με τους σταυρούς και ξόδευε την ώρα της άνεσης του με προσευχές και ψαλμούς. Μέχρι που έφτασε στο σημείο να προδώσει τη συζυγική της πίστη!
