Ο Άγιος Τελεσφόρος καταγόταν από την Ελλάδα και ήλθε στη Ρώμη κατά τις αρχές του 2ου αιώνα μ.Χ. Εξελέγη Επίσκοπος Ρώμης το 125 μ.Χ., διαδεχθείς τον Επίσκοπο Σίξτο Α'. Ως Επίσκοπος Ρώμης καταπολέμησε τις ποικίλες αιρέσεις των Γνωστικών και εισήγαγε πολλές λειτουργικές διατάξεις της Εκκλησίας της Ανατολής στη Δύση.
