Ο Άγιος Ζαχαρίας γεννήθηκε κατά το δεύτερο ήμισυ του 6ου αιώνα μ.Χ. Εξελέγη Πατριάρχης Ιεροσολύμων το 609 μ.Χ. και κατά την κατάληψη της Ιερουσαλήμ από τους Πέρσες, το έτος 614 μ.Χ., αιχμαλωτίσθηκε και οδηγήθηκε στην Περσία. Από εκεί έγραψε σπουδαία επιστολή προς την Εκκλησία των Ιεροσολύμων με προτροπές για μετάνοια και ευσπλαχνία.
