Συγκεχυμένες και ασαφείς οι πληροφορίες για τη ζωή του Οσίου Μάρκου του Αθηναίου. Από διήγηση του Όσιου Σεραπίωνος μαθαίνουμε ότι ασκήτευσε τον 4ο αιώνα μ.Χ. στην έρημο πέραν της χώρας των Χετταίων, μάλλον πέραν της Αιγύπτου, στο όρος της Θράκης (όχι βέβαια της ελληνικής) για 95 ολόκληρα χρόνια. Πατρίδα του ήταν η Αθήνα. Απεβίωσε ειρηνικά. Ίσως να είναι το ίδιο πρόσωπο με τον όσιο Μάρκο τον Ασκητή (βλέπε ίδια ημέρα).
