Ο Όσιος Βαραδάτος καταγόταν από την Αλεξάνδρεια και σε νεαρή ηλικία, επέλεξε την ερημική ζωή. Έτσι, όταν ο Πατριάρχης Αντιοχείας Θεόδοτος (418 - 427 μ.Χ.), πληροφορήθηκε για τις σπάνιες αρετές του Βαραδάτη, φρόντισε να τον αποσπάσει από την ασκητική ζωή του για να τον χρησιμοποιήσει στο πολύπλευρο κοινωνικό και φιλανθρωπικό έργο της εκκλησίας. Πράγματι, ο Όσιος δέχθηκε την πρόταση και σε περιόδους νηστείας περιόδευσε στις πόλεις και με την Άγια ζωή του ενέπνευσε το σεβασμό στο δημιουργό Θεό και τις εντολές του, ως επίσης ενέπνευσε υπομονή στις δύσκολες περιστάσεις της ζωής. Έτσι οσιακά εκοιμήθη σε μία από τις περιοδείες του.
