Ο Όσιος Νικόλαος γεννήθηκε στη Σικελία, από την οποία πήρε και το όνομά του. Αγαπούσε τη μοναχική ζωή και οδηγήθηκε από την Πρόνοια του Θεού στο όρος Νεότακος (σήμερα λέγεται Σκοτεινή) της Εύβοιας. Επειδή το μέρος που του υπεδείχθη δεν είχε νερό, ο Άγιος χτύπησε μία πέτρα και ανέβλυσε νερό.
