Ο Πατριάρχης Ιωάννης ο Ε' διαδέχτηκε τον Θωμά Β' το έτος 668 μ.Χ. και πατριάρχευσε μέχρι το 674 μ.Χ. Προηγούμενα, πρεσβύτερος της Εκκλησίας της Κωνσταντινούπολης, είχε υπηρετήσει σαν πρωτέκδικος και χαρτοφύλακας του Πατριαρχείου και σκευοφύλακας της αγίας Σοφίας. Διακρίθηκε για το ορθόδοξο φρόνημα του και ποίμανε την εκκλησία ειρηνικά επί Κωνσταντίνου του Πωγωνάτου. Υπήρξε φιλάνθρωπος, αφιλοχρήματος, ζούσε με μεγάλη μάλιστα απλότητα και πάντα έλεγε, ότι κανένα άλλο δεν τιμά τον κληρικό και μάλιστα τον Ιεράρχη, όσο η απλότητα της ζωής του και η διάθεση των εισοδημάτων του για τους πεινασμένους και γυμνούς.
