Ὁ Ἅγιος Μάρκελλος Α’, Ἐπίσκοπος Ρώμης (308 – 309 μ.Χ.), καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴ Ρώμη καὶ διαδέχθηκε τὸν Ἅγιο Ἱερομάρτυρα Μερκελλίνο († 7 Ἰουνίου). Κατήγγειλε δημοσίως τὸν αὐτοκράτορα γιὰ τὴ σκληρότητά του πρὸς τοὺς ἀθώους Χριστιανοὺς καὶ τοὺς διωγμοὺς καὶ ἐκεὶνος ἔδωσε ἐντολὴ νὰ τ]ν βασανίσουν. Περιορίσθηκε καὶ ἐκλείσθηκε ἀπὸ τὸν αὐτοκράτορα Μαξέντιο σὲ ναό, τὸν ὁποῖο εἶχαν ἱδρύσει οἱ παρθένες Πρίσκιλλα καὶ Λουκία, καὶ ὁ ὁποῖος μετατράπηκε σὲ σταῦλο. Ἐκεῖ ἀπέθανε ἀπὸ τὶς κακουχίες καὶ τὰ βάσανα μακριὰ ἀπὸ τὴν ἔδρα του. Ἐνταφιάσθηκε στὸ κοιμητήριο τῆς Ἁγίας Πρισκίλλης. Ἡ μνήμη του ἑορτάζεται, πλὴν τῆς παρούσης ἡμέρας, καὶ τὴ 16η Ἰανουαρίου.
