Ο Όσιος Ιωάννης ήταν Βούλγαρος στην καταγωγή και γεννήθηκε στο χωριό Σκρίνο, κοντά στη Σόφια (Βουλγαρίας), επί βασιλείας Πέτρου του Βούλγαρου (περί το 884 μ.Χ.). Έχοντας μοναχική κλίση, πήγε πρώτα σε κάποια Μονή και κατόπιν ανέβηκε στο όρος Ρίλα. Εκεί έκτισε πρώτα μικρή καλύβα, που με το χρόνο έγινε καταφύγιο πολλών μοναχών. Οπότε έκτισε τη Μονή του Ρίλα, στην οποία ασκητικά αφού έζησε, απεβίωσε ειρηνικά.
