Ο Όσιος Θεοδόσιος καταγόταν από την Αντιόχεια της Συρίας και ήταν τέκνο πλουσίων και επίσημων γονέων. Τον ενέπνεε όμως ευσέβεια θερμή και ιερός πόθος να ακολουθήσει την οδό της μοναχικής πολιτείας. Γι’ αυτό αναχωρήσει για την Κιλικία. Μόλις βρήκε στα όρη της πόλεως Ρώσου κάποιο δασώδες φαράγγι, κατασκεύασε εκεί έναν πολύ μικρό οικίσκο, όπου και έστησε την κατοικία του.
