Ὁ Ἅγιος Ζώσιμος ἔζησε στὴν Κιλικία καὶ ἐκατοικοῦσε στὴν ἔρημο. Ἐκεῖ τὸν ἀναζήτησαν οἱ εἰδωλολάτρες, τὸν ἔπιασαν καὶ τὸν ὁδήγησαν στὸν ἄρχοντα Δομετιανό. Ὁ Ἅγιος Ζώσιμος ὁμολόγησε μὲ παρρησία μπροστὰ στὸν ἄρχοντα τὴν πίστη του στὸν Ἰησοῦ Χριστό. Ὁ ἄρχοντας τότε διέταξε νὰ ὑποβάλουν τὸν Ἅγιο σὲ φοβερὰ βασανιστήρια. Τοῦ ἔκαψαν, λοιπόν, τὰ αὐτιὰ μὲ πυρακτωμένα σίδερα, τὸν ἔριξαν μέσα σὲ καζάνι γεμάτο βόρβορο ποὺ ἐκόχλαζε καὶ τελικὰ τὸν κρέμασαν μὲ τὸ κεφάλι πρὸς τὰ κάτω. Κατὰ τρόπο ὅμως θαυμαστὸ διασώθηκε ἀπὸ ὅλα αὐτὰ τὰ βασανιστήρια. Ἡ μανία τῶν εἰδωλολατρῶν δὲν ἐσταμάτησε ἐδῶ· ἔριξαν τὸν ἅγιο στὴν ἀρένα τοῦ θεάτρου νὰ τὸν κατασπαράξουν τὰ πεινασμένα ἄγρια θηρία. Ἐκεῖ ὅμως ἐμφανίσθηκε ἕνα λιοντάρι καὶ μὲ ἀνθρώπινη φωνὴ ὁμίλησε γιὰ τὸν Χριστό. Τὸ θαυμαστὸ αὐτὸ γεγονὸς εἶχε ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα νὰ προσελκυσθεῖ στὴν Χριστιανικὴ πίστη ὁ Κομενταρήσιος Ἀθανάσιος. Ἀλλὰ καὶ ὁ τύραννος, ὕστερα ἀπὸ τὸ γεγονὸς αὐτό, ἄφησε ἐλεύθερο τὸν Ἅγιο.
