Ὑπῆρξε στὰ χρόνια του βασιλιὰ Θεοφίλου τοῦ εἰκονομάχου (829) καὶ καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴν ἐπαρχία τῶν Γαλατῶν τῆς Μ. Ἀσίας. Ἦταν γιὸς τοῦ Θεοφίλου καὶ τῆς Εὐδοκίας καὶ τὸ πρῶτο του ὄνομα ἦταν Λέων. Ἐπειδὴ ἦταν ὡραῖος καὶ δυνατὸς στὸ σῶμα ἀλλὰ καὶ στὴ φρόνηση, ὁ βασιλιὰς τὸν ἔκανε κόμη.
