Ο Αύδακτος (ή Άδαυκτος) ήταν από την Έφεσο και είχε τιμηθεί από τον Μαξιμίνο έπαρχος, διότι ήταν πολύ συνετός και πλούσιος. Επειδή όμως ο Μαξιμίνος ζήτησε την κόρη του Καλλισθένη για γυναίκα του, ο Αύδακτος δεν θέλησε να τη δώσει σ' έναν ειδωλολάτρη. Γι' αυτό άρπαξαν τα υπάρχοντα του και τον εξόρισαν στη Μελιτινή, όπου τον αποκεφάλισαν. Η δε κόρη του Καλλισθένη, αφού κουρεύτηκε και φόρεσε ανδρικά ρούχα, κρυβόταν κάπου στη Νικομήδεια.
