Ο Όσιος Νικήτας καταγόταν από την Παφλαγονία και γεννήθηκε το έτος 763 μ.Χ. από ευσεβείς γονείς τον Γρηγόριο και την Άννα, οι όποιοι τον ανέθρεψαν σύμφωνα με τις επιταγές του Ευαγγελίου. Ιδιαίτερη μάλιστα αγάπη προς τον Άγιο, είχε η συγγένισσά του βασίλισσα Ειρήνη (άλλοι αναφέρουν Θεοδώρα). Προσλήφθηκε στα ανάκτορα και ανέβηκε με την αρετή και την ικανότητά του στο αξίωμα του πατρικίου και στρατηγού της Σικελίας. Έχοντας όμως κλίση στην ήρεμη ζωή, έγινε μοναχός. Αλλά καταδιώχτηκε από τους εικονομάχους βασιλείς Λέοντα και Θεόφιλο και εξορίστηκε πολλές φορές. Μετά από πολλές ταλαιπωρίες, σε ηλικία 75 χρονών απεβίωσε ειρηνικά το έτος 838 μ.Χ.
