Ἡ ἱερὰ εἰκόνα τῆς Παναγίας τῆς Γαλακτοτροφούσης βρισκόταν ἀρχικὰ στὴ Λαύρα τοῦ Ὁσίου Σάββα στὰ Ἱεροσόλυμα. Κατὰ τὸν 13ο αἰώνα μ.Χ. ἐπισκέφθηκε τὴ Λαύρα ὁ Ἅγιος Σάββας, Ἀρχιεπίσκοπος τῆς Σερβίας († 14 Ἰανουαρίου), στὸν ὁποῖο ἀναφέρθηκε παράδοση σωσμένη στὸ μοναστήρι, κατὰ τὴν ὁποία ὁ Ὅσιος Σάββας εἶχε πεῖ ὅτι ἡ εἰκόνα τῆς Ὑπεραγίας Θεοτόκου τῆς Γαλακτοτροφούσης θὰ δωριζόταν στὸν Ἀρχιεπίσκοπο τῆς Σερβίας. Ἔτσι τοῦ χάρισαν τὴν ἁγία εἰκόνα. Ὁ Ἅγιος Σάββας τὴν πρόσφερε στὴ Μονὴ Χιλανδαρίου τοῦ Ἁγίου Ὄρους.
