Ὁ Ἅγιος Μάρτυρας Πιόνιος ἔζησε κατὰ τοὺς χρόνους τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα Δεκίου (249 – 251 μ.Χ.) καὶ ἦταν πρεσβύτερος τῆς Ἐκκλησίας τῆς Σμύρνης. Ἔλεγχε τοὺς Ἰουδαίους καὶ τοὺς Ἐθνικοὺς καὶ τοὺς ἔπειθε ἀπὸ τὶς θεῖες Γραφὲς ὅτι ἕνας μόνο εἶναι ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἀληθινός, ὁ Δημιουργὸς τῶν πάντων καὶ ὁ μονογενής Του Υἱὸς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον καὶ κήρυττε ὅτι ὅλοι οἱ ἁμαρτωλοὶ καὶ οἱ ἄπιστοι θὰ τιμωρηθοῦν καὶ θὰ παραδοθοῦν στὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιο. Ἔτσι συνελήφθη ἀπὸ τοὺς εἰδωλολάτρες μαζὶ μὲ ἄλλους Χριστιανούς. Καὶ πρῶτα παραδόθηκε ἁλυσοδεμένος στὸν Πολέμωνα, τὸν ἱερέα τῶν εἰδώλων καὶ στὸν ἄρχοντα τῆς πόλεως Ἐλπίδιο. Ἔπειτα ὁδηγήθηκε στὸν ἡγεμόνα τῆς χώρας, ἀνθύπατο Κοντυλιανό, ὁ ὁποῖος ἔδωσε ἐντολὴ νὰ τὸν βασανίσουν. Τὸν κτύπησαν ἀνηλεῶς μέχρι θανάτου καὶ ἀφοῦ τὸν κρέμασαν σὲ ξύλο, κατέκαψαν τὰ πλευρά του μὲ ἀναμμένες δάδες φωτιᾶς. Στὴν συνέχεια τὸν ἔριξαν μέσα σὲ καμίνι καὶ ὁ Ἅγιος προσευχόμενος μέσα σὲ αὐτό, τελείωσε μαρτυρικὰ τὸν βίο του.
