Ὁ Ὅσιος Μαρουθᾶς ἔζησε κατὰ τὴν ἐποχὴ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορα Θεοδοσίου Α’ τοῦ Μεγάλου (379 – 395 μ.Χ.) καὶ ἦταν Ἐπίσκοπος τῆς Ἐκκλησίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Ὁ αὐτοκράτορας, ἐκτιμώντας τὶς ἀρετὲς τοῦ Ἁγίου, τὸν ἀπέστειλε πρεσβευτὴ στὸ βασιλέα τῶν Περσῶν Σαπὼρ Γ’ (383 – 388 μ.Χ.). Ἐκεῖ ὁ Ὅσιος ἀπάλλαξε τὴ θυγατέρα τοῦ βασιλέως ἀπὸ τὸ πονηρὸ δαιμόνιο, ποὺ τὴν εἶχε κυριεύσει καὶ τὴν βασάνιζε. Τὸ γεγονὸς αὐτὸ τοῦ ἔδωσε θάρρος καὶ ζήτησε ἀπὸ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Περσίας τὰ ἱερὰ λείψανα τῶν Μαρτύρων, οἱ ὁποῖοι μαρτύρησαν στὴν Περσία. Ἐκεῖνος ἱκανοποίησε ἀμέσως τὸ αἴτημα τοῦ Ὁσίου. Ἔτσι, λοιπόν, ὁ Ὅσιος ἔκτισε πόλη ἐπ’ ὀνόματί τους, τὴ Μαρτυρόπολη, ποὺ βρισκόταν στὴ Μεγάλη Ἀρμενία, κοντὰ στὸ Νυμαφαῖο ποταμό, καὶ ἀποθησαύρισε σὲ αὐτὴν τὰ ἱερά τους λείψανα.
