Alunperin 700-luvulta peräisin olevasta Kolmikätisestä Jumalanäidin ikonista kerrotaan perimätiedon mukaan, että pyhältä Johannes Damaskolaiselta katkaistiin oikea käsi, koska häntä vastaan oli esitetty myöhemmin vääriksi osoittautuneita syytteitä. Kuitenkin palavien rukousten voimalla ja Jumalanäidin esirukouksien auttamana käsi liittyi takaisin paikoilleen yön aikana ja parantui täysin. Tämän tapahtuman jälkeen pyhä Johannes oli valmistuttanut hopeasta käden, jonka hän liitti Jumalanäidin ikoniin merkiksi tästä ihmeparantumisestaan. Tämän jälkeen näihin ikoneihin on sitten maalattu aina kolmas käsi.
