Pyhittäjä Ammun Egyptiläinen kasvoi kristillisessä perheessä. Hän meni naimisiin vanhempiensa toiveesta, mutta puolisonsa kanssa tekemänsä sopimuksen mukaan he säilyttivät neitsyytensä ja elivät kuten veli ja sisar. Puolisonsa kanssa Ammun harjoitti asketismia, paastoten ja rukoillen yhdessä 20 vuotta. Tämän jälkeen he jatkoivat asketismia erillään ja Ammonin vaimo perusti nunnaluostarin. Ammon meni Nitrianin erämaahan, missä hän vietti 22 vuotta.
