Pyhä Kiprian Kiovan ja koko Venäjän metropoliitta oli syntyjään serbi ja kilvoitteli pyhällä Athosvuorella. Hänen hurskautensa ja koulutuksensa tuli Konstantinopolin patriarkka Filotheoksen (Φιλόθεος ὁ Κόκκινος, 1354.1355 ja 1364-1376) tietoon ja hän vihki Kiprianin vuonna 1375 Kiovan ja Liettuan metropoliitaksi.
