Pyhä Dometoanos Meliteneläinen oli hurskaan ylimysperheen poika, joka syntyi noin vuoden 550 tienoilla ja joka sai perheeltään hyvän koulutuksen perehtyen hyvin niin filosofiaan kuin teologiaankin. Mentyään naimisiin ja jäätyään pian leskeksi, hän antautui kirkolliselle uralle ja hänet vihittiin papiksi. Pian - todella nuorena, 30-vuoden iässä - hänet vihittiin myös piispaksi Armenian Meliteneen (nykyisin Malatya).
