Este Nicolás nació en Sidonia (ahora Canea) en Creta, de padres acomodados quienes lo llevaron a los diez años de edad a Constantinopla con su tío Teofanes, al monasterio de Studius. El abad quedó muy bien impresionado con el jovencito y le permitió entrar a la escuela del monasterio, donde pronto se distinguió por su docilidad y ahinco para aprender. A la edad de dieciocho años, se hizo monje y se notó que la obediencia a la regla no representaba ningún obstáculo para él, pues ya había llegado al dominio de sí mismo. No estaba destinado Nicolás para llevar una vida pacífica en aquellos tumultuosos tiempos. En 867, mataron a Miguel y su sucesor, el emperador Basilio, no sólo restituyó a San Ignacio, sino que también deseó restablecer al abad Nicolás, quien, sin embargo, se excusó por su avanzada edad. Murió entre sus monjes y fue sepultado junto a San Teodoro, su gran predecesor.
