San Anastasio era un hombre de gran saber y piedad. Según Evagrio, era muy poco inclinado a hablar y cuando alguien discutía de asuntos temporales en su presencia, parecía no tener oídos ni lengua; en cambio, poseía el don de consolar a los afligidos. Durante veintitrés años estuvo desterrado de su sede por haberse opuesto a las herejías que apoyaban los emperadores Justiniano I y Justino II; pero el emperador Mauricio le restituyó a su sede, a instancias de su amigo, el Papa Gregorio I. Han llegado hasta nosotros algunas de las cartas y sermones de San Anastasio.
