Juan vivió una vida ascetismo en las llamadas «cuevas antiguas», el «antiguo monasterio» (gr. lavra) de san Caritón el Grande en Palestina. Amando a Cristo con todo su corazón, con toda su alma y toda su mente, Juan comenzó a viajar a lugares santos desde su juventud para escuchar las enseñanzas y consejos de varones santos. Finalmente se estableció en las cuevas de Caritón, donde se entregó a un riguroso ascetismo, pasando días y años en ayuno, oración, vigilias, meditando de continuo sobre la muerte, y enseñándose como ser humilde. Como un buen fruto maduro, fue recogido por la muerte y asentó su aposento en el Paraíso. Vivió y murió en el siglo VIII.
