Un opositor de la unión con Roma (contrario a su predecesor, Juan Becos, 1275-1282), fue un asceta y hombre de oración desde su niñez. Aunque era muy amado por el pueblo, causo malestar a algunos clérigos por su rectitud moral. Se retiró a su monasterio en el monte Ganos, donde vivió en mayor ascetismo que antes. El mismo Señor Jesucristo se le apareció allí y gentilmente le reprochó por haber abandonado su rebaño a los lobos. Tras haber profetizado la fecha de un gran terremoto en Constantinopla, el emperador Andrónico le llamó de nuevo al trono patriarcal. Allí regresó muy en contra de su voluntad, y más adelante se retiró secretamente de nuevo a su vida ascética, llegando a la edad de cien años.
