Onésimo era esclavo de Filemón, personaje importante de Colosa de Frigia, convertido por San Pablo. Cuando huía de la justicia, después de haber robado a su amo, Onésimo entró en contacto con San Pablo, quien se hallaba entonces prisionero en Roma. El Apóstol le convirtió y bautizó y le envió a la casa de Filemón con una carta de recomendación. Según parece, Filemón perdonó y puso en libertad a su esclavo arrepentido y le mandó reunirse de nuevo con San Pablo. San Jerónimo y otros autores, dicen que Onésimo y Tiquio, el portador de la epístola a los colosenses, llegaron bajo la dirección del Apóstol, a ser predicadores del Evangelio y obispos.
