Tabita, que quiere decir «gacela», era discípula de los Apóstoles y vivía en Jope, la moderna Jaffa. «Abundaba en buenas obras y en limosnas» (cfr. Hechos 9:36). Se debilitó repentinamente y murió mientras el apóstol Pedro estaba en Lida, y los doloridos discípulos enviaron a Pedro pidiéndole que viniese para consolar a su pueblo. Al llegar el gran Apóstol de Cristo, pidió a todos que saliesen de la habitación en la que estaba el cadáver, y entonces se arrodilló para orar. Cuando hubo terminado de orar, dijo al cadáver: «¡Tabita, levántate!», y Tabita abrió sus ojos y se levantó. Atraídos por esta maravilla, muchos vinieron a creer en Cristo el Señor.
