María fue al principio una lectora del Salterio en la Iglesia de la Resurrección en Jerusalén; pero siendo hermosa, era motivo de escándalo para los de mente pecaminosa. Para no ser la causa del pecado de otros, María se retiró al desierto de Souka con una canasta de judías y un jarro de agua. Pasó dieciocho años en el desierto y, por el poder de Dios, nunca careció de judías ni agua. Unos discípulos de san Ciríaco la hallaron durante su vida, y luego la enterraron.
