Máximo era hijo del rey serbio Esteban el Ciego y de su esposa Angelina. Fue tonsurado monje en el Monasterio de Manasija. Acosado por los turcos, huyó a Rumanía, donde fue consagrado a la sede arzobispal de Valaquia, que estaba vacante. Hizo la paz entre los comandantes enemigos Radul y Bogdan, evitando una guerra entre ellos. En sus últimos años regresó a Krušedol en Serbia, donde construyó un monasterio. Allí murió, tras una larga vida ascética, el 18 de enero de 1546. Sus reliquias incorruptas, que obran milagros, descansan aún hoy en este monasterio.
