Este santo mártir vivio en los años del rey Marco Aurelio (160). Nació probablemente en Smirna alrededor del año 140, porque en algunos de sus escritos comentaba que: de niño había conoció al obispo de Smirna Policarpo, quién fue su maestro. Policarpo era sucesor de los apóstoles, y lo ordeno obispo de la ciudad Lugdúnu la actual Lyón Francia (luego de la muerte de su antecesor Potheinu. El Santo escribió numerosos libros principalmente dogmáticos y con ellos apuntaló a muchos cristianos en la fe, rescatándolos de los errores de los idolatras. Finalmente, fue decapitado por el rey Sebíroen el año 202.
