Nicéforo era originalmente católico romano, y luego abrazó la fe Ortodoxa. Vivió una vida ascética en el Monte Atos junto al sabio Teolepto. Fue luego maestro del glorioso Gregorio Palamás y escribió un tratado sobre la oración noética. Fue al Señor en paz en el siglo XIV. Nicéforo enseñaba lo siguiente: «Recoge tu mente y fuérzala a entrar en tu corazón y a permanecer allí. Cuando tu mente esté asentada en tu corazón no debe permanecer vacía; permítele, pues, hacer continuamente esta oración: «¡Señor Jesucristo, Hijo de Dios, ten piedad de mí!» Nunca le permitas estar en silencio. Por causa de esto, la cadena entera de las virtudes entrará en ti: amor, gozo, paz, y todas las demás, por las cuales cada una de tus peticiones a Dios serán concedidas luego».
