Santa Pelagia nació en Tarso (Asia Menor) de padres muy conocidos - paganos. Ella se distinguía por su indescriptible belleza y por su brillante educación. El emperador Dioclesiano (284-305) quería casar a Pelagia con su heredero adoptivo, pero ella, al tener fe en Jesucristo, deseó dedicarle su vida, y negó su mano al heredero del emperador. Al bautizarse, Pelagia decidió iluminar con la fe de Cristo a su madre pagana. Pero aquella, respondía a ello porfiadamente, y con maldad llevó a su hija ante el novio rechazado, y se la entregó en sus manos.
