Eran hijos del gran Príncipe Vladimir, Iluminador del pueblo ruso. Hasta su bautismo, Vladimir tuvo muchas esposas e hijos con todas ellas. Boris y Gleb eran hermanos de madre. Antes de su muerte en el 1015, Vladimir dividió su reino entre todos sus hijos, pero Sviatopolk, su hijo mayor y Príncipe de Kiev, deseaba tomar las partes de Boris y Gleb, así que envió hombres para que mataran a Boris en un lugar y a Gleb en otro. Ambos hermanos eran profundamente piadosos y agradaban a Dios en todo, y encontraron la muerte con oración y levantando sus corazones hacia Él. Sus cuerpos permanecieron incorruptos y fragantes, y fueron enterrados en el pueblo de Vishgorod, donde hasta el día de hoy un bienaventurado poder fluye de ellos para sanar a los hombres de diversas enfermedades y sufrimientos.
