El Hieromártir Basilio, Obispo de Amasea, vivió a principios del siglo IV en la ciudad Pontine de Amasea. Él alentó y ayudo a los cristianos que sufrían persecución por parte de los paganos. Durante este tiempo la parte oriental del Imperio Romano fue gobernado por Licinio (311-324), el cuñado del santo emperador Constantino el Grande (21 de mayo). Licinio engañosamente firmo el Edicto de Milán de San Constantino (313), que concedió la tolerancia religiosa a los cristianos, pero los odiaba y continuaba persiguiéndolos.
