El mártir San Doroteo, era un sacerdote de Tiro y obispo de esa diócesis. Durante el reinado de Diocleciano, tras de haber sufrido toda suerte de penurias por la causa de la fe en su ciudad natal, fue por fin desterrado. Un alivio en el rigor de la persecución le permitió regresar al seno de su rebaño y asistir al Concilio de Nicea, en 325. Pero en cuanto Juliano el Apóstata ocupó el trono, se reanudó la persecución y entonces Doroteo huyó de nuevo para refugiarse en Odissópolis, en la Tracia. Sin embargo, hasta ahí le acosaron sus perseguidores, que le descubrieron, le aprehendieron y le apalearon tan brutalmente, que murió a consecuencia de los golpes. Se dice que, por entonces, tenía 107 años.
