Santa Nina (Nunia, Nino) era la sobrina del Patriarca de Jerusalén. Desde su juventud ella amó al Dios y lamentaba mucho por la gente la que no creían en Él. Después que su padre Zavulon (de Capadocia) se hizo ermitaño y la madre fue ordenada diaconisa, Santa Nina fue entregada para su crianza a una piadosa anciana, quien muchas veces le contaba a Nina sobre Iberia (actualmente Georgia), en aquellos tiempos un país pagano y estos cuentos han despertado en ella un fuerte deseo de visitar este país y cristianizar a su gente con la luz del Evangelio.
