Nació en Constantinopla, donde pasó toda su vida, en el seno de una familia emparentada con la del emperador Teodosio. Desde muy joven se entregó al servicio de Dios y a la caridad para con los pobres. El año 455 el patriarca Anatolio lo ordenó sacerdote, con lo cual Marciano se sintió más obligado aún a buscar la perfección. Fue acusado de hereje pero su mansedumbre y humildad triunfaron de todas las críticas y la persecución a que fue sometido sirvió para purificar aún más su alma. Murió el año cuatrocientos setenta y uno o cuatrocientos ochenta y nueve.
