Apolinaria es hija del "Emperador" Antemio. Disfrazada de hombre y bajo el nombre de Doroteo, vivió como ermitaño en el desierto, bajo la dirección del renombrado asceta Macario. Su hermana, poseída por el demonio, fue conducida al desierto, donde Doroteo se encargó de exorcizarla. La joven recuperó la razón, pero el diablo se ingenió para que los monjes acusaran a Doroteo de haber cometido actos infames con ella. Doroteo tuvo que responder de su conducta ante su propio padre y se le dio a conocer. Después de obtener la perfecta curación de su hermana con sus oraciones, insistió en volver al desierto, donde los monjes no descubrieron su sexo sino hasta su muerta.
