Gregorio nació en la Decápolis isauriana de eminentes y piadosos padres, Sergio y María. Estos querían que se casara al terminar su educación, pero él huyó al desierto y se hizo monje. Vivió en varios lugares: Constantinopla, Roma, y el Monte Olimpo. Dondequiera que iba, maravillaba a los hombres por su ascetismo y sus milagros. En ocasiones lo iluminaba una luz celestial, y los ángeles de Dios se le aparecían; él contemplaba la hermosura de los ángeles y escuchaba sus dulces cantos. Vivió por muchos años agradando a Dios, y murió en paz en Constantinopla en el siglo IX, entrando su alma al gozo de su Señor.
