Hll. Märtyrer Bacchus und Sergius waren Offiziere der römischen Armee bei den Grenztruppen in Syrien. Sie wurden etwa 305 um ihres Glaubens willen getötet, Bacchus durch Enthauptung und Sergius wurde zu Tode gepeitscht. Am Grab von Bacchus und Sergius in Rasafah am Rand des Euphrattales in Nord - Zentralsyrien, - das später in Sergiupolis umbenannt wurde und heute eine Ruinenstadt ist - entstand eine rege Märtyrer - Verehrung.
